The Rising

Game Profile: None
In The Rising, there is no place to hide, there is no escape, and you will not be rescued. The only hope available for mankind will come from your determination and resilience. The time of avoidance and submission are over. The only option is to resist.


======GAME PLAY========

Choose to play as part of The Resistance and fight back the rising threat of extinction from the Necrotrophs; or, choose to wipe clean the dirty slate of humanity.

Current Alpha Functionality and Game Play: (These are some basic things we hope to or have accomplished in our internal alpha)

-Create two new teams called The Resistance and The Necrotrophs (finished)

-Once a member of the resistance is killed, they spawn as a Necro (Finished!)

-Restrict Necrotrophs to melee weapons (finished)

-Balance the amount of ammo that is picked up between all of the ammo items (unfinished)

-Replace combine models with citizen models (finished)

-Create Map Objectives functionality (unfinished)







=======Back Story=======
(Work in progress, names are placeholders)
With the arrival of a new deadly pandemic, so came forth the visitation from The Friends (a name they insisted they be referred to for it was in that nature that they came).
The Friends explained that, with the innocent concern of a Good Samaritan who sees a distress signal and comes to offer help, such was the reason for their visit to Earth. With dire concern they told us that our planet glowed like an SOS in the galaxy. With a new pandemic rampant on Earth, as well as pollution and war, The Friends diagnosed Mankind as sick and dying, and they prescribed and offered freely their cure.

They offered a symbiotic relationship with an organism from their home planet. The organism would cure any virus, disease, or bacteria that entered the human body. It would also help to suppress negative feelings such as anger and jealousy. However, what was not said was that what could be suppressed could also be amplified. The Friends only had one request: the firearm (which they insisted to represent Mans cruelty) was to be destroyed.

Although all who suffered with illness accepted the organism; those who showed a natural immunity to the new disease refused. Feeling that not only had they no need for the organism, but they also strongly disliked the idea of it having the ability to control their feelings. A fact that the plagued may have felt for or against; but in the end, had no choice but to accept the organism. Soon The Symbiotic Government, which was created by those who carried the organism, was founded; for they felt they had risen above human flaw and demanded the authority to govern the future of Mankind. Soon, a social division was drawn between those who carried the organism and those who did not.

All who opposed the Symbiotic Government with its fearful love of domination were driven underground like rats, tolerated for a while until The Great Eradication: This movement proclaimed the Symbiotic Government was infected with insurrectionist disease with which it was determined to eradicate.

With the Symbiotic Governments shift from neutrality to hostility, so came the formation of the Resistance. An underground militia that was not only comprised of the immune but those who still suffered from illness but refused to harbor the organism. As it became increasingly difficult to control this last minority, the sentient organism finally boosted levels of rage and adrenaline to create a new savage-like race of humans.

Seven months after the first day of contact, Earth has now become occupied by the Necrotrophs; a name coined by the Resistance scientists to refer to those who harbor the organism that not only intends to kill its host over time, or at a moments notice if it resists, but also has full control over all sensations and consciousness. These Necrotrophs are merely the foot-soldiers of a collective consciousness. The fate of Mankind rests within this tug-of-war between the Necrotrophs and the Resistance.

The Rising MOD - Ammo Checking

Trying to find a good method of removing a weapons ammo count from the HUD can be very challenging. One trend has been to add a GUI element on the actual weapon model itself. As The Rising is set in modern times, this doesn't really work for us.

Another trend has been to simply fadeout the ammo counter when the weapon hasn't been fired recently (Far Cry 2 comes to mind). While this is great for most shooters, it lacks the right level of realism and suspense we are going for.

The method I like the most is having the player actually "check their ammo" ("Condemned: Criminal Origins"). While this worked exceptionally well for this horror-themed single-player game, nobody has ever tried it in a multi-player game.

Need Skinning Help for Ak Bayonet

In preparation for the MODDB awards, we’ve been gathering lots of new media ready for everybody to view. One of the things that I’ve always had difficulty was explaining the setting and back-story of the mod. Usually when I try to quickly formulate a synopsis on the spot, it makes the mod sound not very exciting. So because of this, the first round of media for The Rising is going to be an “Intro” trailer explaining what’s going on. I hope that once everybody knows what is happening story-wise, they’ll appreciate the upcoming media assets more.

Synopsis
Just as mankind is on the brink of extinction from a deadly pandemic, Extraterrestrials establish contact and offer a "cure" (an organism from their home planet). Although the majority of the population is afflicted by the raging virus and have no other option, a small minority immune to the virus resist the organism. Due to Mans inability to coexist, a social division emerges masking the presence of this hostile organism.

Hopefully many of you will be bloated on your coaches filled with mashed potatoes and turkey tomorrow. So while you're passed out, be sure to tap the person next to you on head and tell them about The Rising and this update!

While we continue to put our main focus on bug fixes and planning for future gameplay features, we've also manged to make some progress on a few new art assets.
The first thing we have came from the awesome Sick420 who is working on some great 357 animations (ironsights animations are on their way soon, these animations will have both hands gripping the gun):

The Rising Mod for Half-Life 2 Videos & Audio - Mod DB
Credit to Fuckles the Cat for his 357 firing sounds. Also, the skin applied to these arms will not be in TR, they were just used for testing purposes.

Another is the Necro v3 Head. While it is still a heavy WIP, hopefully when this thing is done we'll find a good character animator to help us out.

The Rising has begun invitational beta testing!

I'm happy to announce that The Rising will be ready for testing sometime tonight (beware, testers will get a striped down version of the map). We are seeking mature individuals who can be relied on and give constructive feedback. Also, if anybody can bring with them server support, that would be much appreciated. If you are interested, please email me at: mattd@therisingmod.com with your name, steam name, system specs (low specs will not be denied, we want to know how our mod performs on lower-spec machines). Testers with previous testing experience and server support is a plus.

*Games that are required:
-Half-life 2: Deathmatch

We're are good on weapons, we could use props though. Can you make any old/rusty looking cars or traffic lights?
