What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.
Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
You can help by simply running a piece of software.
Folding@home is a distributed computing project -- people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.
F@H Quick FAQQ.What kind of hardware do I need to run F@H?
A.Folding@Home can run on many different things, the best being a GPU. Only X1600, X1800, and X1900 series GPUs from ATI are supported though. F@H can also run on pretty much any CPU, dual, and multi cores. Also if you have multiple computers (Macs and PCs) or a PS3, those help alot too.
UPDATE: Now with the new drivers anyone with an 8 series card or better can fold.
Q.What's is the best version for me?
A.If you have a X1900 series video card with 256MB+ of VRAM, use that.
For Single core CPUs the console version is preferred.
For dual core and hyperthreaded CPUs Run two instances of F@H.Download: Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista text-only console
Creat a folder called "FAH" with two sub folders named "FAH1" and "FAH2".
Copy the FAH executable in "FAH1" and "FAH2".
Launch and configure FAH1.
Launch and configure FAH2, but when you get to the Advanced Settings option enter "yes" and change the Machine ID number option to "2". For Quad core CPUs download the Windows 2000/XP/Vista SMP client console version. Do not use SMP client with dual cores and Hyperthreaded CPUs.
If you're using a Mac or Linux the console versions work the best.
Q.How do I fold for FPSBanana?
A.When configuring your client enter the team number 112073
Q.Will F@H slow the performance of my PC?
A.No F@H is designed to use the idle CPU cycles. So when you are AFK it will use them all up, and when you're gaming it will use what is left.
I will add more in the future.
If you have other questions the Folding@Home site has many FAQs.
